About Us

Evolve Merseyside is an alternative educational provision based in Knowsley and currently work with approximately 25 school children from ages 13 to 16.
The company was formed in August 2014 by Russ Greenop and Steve Hazlehurst both originally from Wirral, although Russ has lived in Knowsley for 15 years. His background has always been working with young people, and for the past 8 years working in a number of Knowsley schools as a work based learning co-ordinator, this role required him to find alternative provision for children not accessing mainstream education either through attendance,  behavioural reasons, or pupils who were not attending due to emotional/bullying issues either in school or their home life. The most frustrating thing Russ found was a lack of quality providers, and none whatsoever that offered support with GCSE core subjects.
In July 2014, Russ and Steve came up with an idea to set up a provision that not only focussed on GCSE core subjects but also attempted to help the year 11 students progress into colleges or apprenticeships/traineeships. This then tapped into Steve’s expertise which was the delivery of training courses to young adults 16 to19 and beyond, that would progress them back into work or have the confidence and skills to apply for work.
The students who are attending Evolve at the moment are all entered into English and Maths Functional Skills qualifications. This is a base level that will give all our students a basic qualification and those who the school will put in for GCSE exams will be supported with course work and mock exams. Evolve has a full time teacher, 2 teaching assistants, an office manager and recently employed a mental health practitioner to deliver a programme to our students through our partnership with Knowsley Council around their Head Start campaign which is trying to promote mental toughness and resilience in young people.
Evolve’s philosophy is to develop the young people who attend our facility and although the GCSE/FS qualifications are important to us, our aims are to nurture, focus on the abilities the child has, and give a basic grounding in attendance, punctuality, respect and understanding. We are now seeing in our students clear progression educationally, but more importantly a marked progression in empathy, support and confidence which we feel is due to continual one to one support where needed.
